antpower: (FMA - ed and winry)

1. I am caught up on LJ comments!

2. Hello, pretty new FMA layout! It is by [livejournal.com profile] tigtastic and terribly pretty. I feel a bit like I'm cheating on SPN but it generally only takes me a month or so to get sick of my layout, so then I can make a spiffing new Winchester one. Huzzah!

3. I wanted to post my thoughts on Fullmetal Alchemist, because, well because I want to.

I always thought I didn't like anime, probably because I'd only ever seen it late at night when I was either too drunk/tired/whatever to pay proper attention, and also because when I was a kid I was pretty sure He-Man would kick Astro Boy's butt. Anyway, what with hiatus from my usual shows being so very long, I figured I'd give it a go. And I'm so glad that happy chance led me to FMA first.

I love Ed. I love Mustang. I love Al and Winry and Hawkeye and Hughes and Armstrong. There is a lot of love here. I think I ship everybody with everybody, but strangely enough I think most of all I ship Ed/Winry and Mustang/Hawkeye. Or, well maybe Ed/Roy, because you know, Awesome + Awesome = A Whole Lot of Awesome. This obviously means there is a lot of fic for me to read.

I loved the relationship between Ed and Al. They love each other like Winchesters. If I was one of those thinky people I would write an awesome essay on the parallels between the two sets of brothers but I am not, so I won't. But you know, they both have extremely tall younger brothers who are goofy and sweet, and wise-cracking older brothers whose humour is merely a mask for their inner pain. And they'd do anything for each other and they're all alone, with people who help them on the way but are never really let inside the Brother Circle of Love. Do NOT let me plan some awesome crossover that I will never write! Even though Dean would look so very hot with auto-mail, omg. Right, I am nipping this train of thought in the bud.

Armstrong was awesome. LOLZ, when... was it Havoc? Had to date Armstrong's sister and he kept picturing her as looking exactly like Armstrong only with long hair and in a dress. And I love how Armstrong always gets the stars around his head and stuff. He's such a marshmallow. LOL, and when he bonds over muscles with Izumi's husband. Awesome, totally awesome.

It broke my heart when Al thought he had fake memories and Ed thought Al hated him. And it broke my heart when Hughes was murdered because he was awesome and totally in love with Roy Mustang. And when they had to kill Sloth. Who wasn't really very Slothful, she was kind of industrious, really. And I was sad when Lust died too, because I liked her and she was hot and when Gluttony was running around all like "where is Lust?", poor little guy.

I also really liked the female good guys in the story, which doesn't happy that often with me, normally they bug me. I loved how Winry was such a girly sort of tomboy and I freaking love how Hawkeye randomly shoots stuff all the time, and how that bookworm girl, Cheska (sp?) just wouldn't let Hughes' murder rest and even called Mustang out on it. They were so fiercely loyal, though I guess that's an overriding theme of FMA, really and not at all gender-specific.

Did I mention that Roy Mustang is the most sexass thing ever? I loved the episode... I think it was episode 37 or something? When it was all about those crazy military kids. I liked it when he was supposed to do his paperwork but then he did everything else instead. It was very domestic and cute.

I loved how what drove the story wasn't really that they wanted to get their original bodies back, but more that Ed and Al wanted to make each other whole. That sounds terribly corny, I guess. And I loved how in the end of the series, Ed was willing to sacrifice himself for Al. In the beginning he sacrifices his arm or whatever to save Al's life and in the end he was willing to give up his own life so Al could have a normal one, it sort of came full circle.

Maybe that's why I didn't like the ending of the movie. At the end of the anime, Ed had sacrificed the thing he cared about the most - not his life but his life with Al, but you knew that no matter what, Ed would come back and everything would be fine. The movie sort of ruined that for me. Ed came back, but it wasn't really fine at all. There didn't seem much point to the whole thing, other than to reunite the brothers.

It bugged me that at the end of the anime, Roy had come to his senses about Riza and seemed to have his head together, but in the movie he was a hermity mess, pining away for Ed. Well, the pining bit was okay, but the rest bugged me and seemed OOC. I mean, after swearing to Hughes that he'd become head honcho and all that, it didn't seem right he'd give up on everything. It bugged me that there was no closure on the Ed/Winry, the gypsy girl bugged me, the Nazi!Hughes bugged me, pretty much the whole storyline bugged me. I mean, couldn't Ed have just told somebody how to close the seal and then popped back home? I just didn't like the our world stuff at all, and I don't know, maybe it was just because Ed didn't look nearly as good without his red cloak, or maybe because Ed and Al weren't together, but... I don't know. I mean, they studied so hard and were such spiffy little alchemists and then they had to come here and start all over again, it didn't seem fair. And after the awesome that was the series, the movie was just a bit weak.

I was happy that Al got his memories back though, and I loved how he looked so much like Ed when he was doing his alchemy. And I guess at least in the end the brothers were still together, that's the main thing.

4. I finished Cassandra Clare's City of Bones.

I liked it. I did keep falling into the habit of comparing it to the DT though, but then Jace was very much like DT!Draco. Which I liked. DT!Draco was always entirely CC's invention, only similar to canon!Draco in looks and name and far, far superior. So, yeah, the DTness of it, I liked. She really writes the whole broken-boy-who-is-vulnerable-but-won't-show-it thing really well. I liked Jace and I liked Simon. Simon was just so startingly normal in the face of all the hoopla, it really made me love him for it. I also liked Isabelle and Alec. Actually, I think Alec was my favourite character, I was pretty worried when he got injured. When Jace got kidnapped and Clary went after him and everything, I was all like BUT WHAT ABOUT ALEC! MAKE SURE HE'S OKAY!

Though, while I seem to be inevitably crushing on CC's male characters, I had the same problem with Clary that I had with Hermione in the DT, though to be fair I don't dislike Clary nearly as passionately. I think it's that they're both so blind to how their actions impact on the people around them, especially the men that care about them. I suppose it's supposed to be because they're humble or whatever, Clary doesn't think of herself as beautiful so she never suspects Simon or Jace love her, but it's pretty obvious. It sort of comes off as being that they're too self-involved to notice anything but their immediate worries. I think it could also be that at times both Clary and DT!Hermione are supposed to be sassy or whatever, but they come of as a bit bitchy. I feel like I'm being harsh, and it's probably good writing that Clary has flaws and whatnot, and I by no means hated her, she just wasn't one of my favourite characters. I was always on her side though. Well, except when she was mean to Alec.

I suspected that Valentine was either Clary's father or Jace's, so I was pretty gratified when I was right on both counts. And it just goes to show how much fandom has warped my brain that I was shipping Clary/Simon right up until we found out Clary and Jace were siblings.

I was also highly amused that Clary had a 'Still Not King' badge on her backpack.

At any rate, I liked it. As ever with CC's stuff, when I finished I wanted to read more, which I think is the most important thing. Maybe I'll reread the DT, I still haven't read the last chapter because I wanted to read the whole thing again before I did, but it's just so very long that it's hard to find the time.

5. Okay, so maybe I have more than four things to post about.

6. I've also been thinking about Deathly Hallows a bit and HP in general, and I have

Dear James Potter.

You are a tool. I don't believe Remus and Sirius when they say you got better later on, I think you were just faking it in front of Lily because I never saw any different.

To me you remain totally unredeemed and I hope Snape is kicking your arse in the afterlife.

Ant.

7. I also wanted to make a bit of an RL update, but I think I've twittered on enough for one day.

I totally keep wanting to read Cassie Clare's book. I don't even know why. When I read the Draco Trilogy, I wasn't a huge fan, but I keep wanting to read it again. I can't find it online, do you know anyone with a saved copy?

I agree about James. I dislike him and find him irredeemable.

Yeah, I think she took the DT down when she got all published and stuff, but I have it saved as a pdf somewhere. Do you want me to email it?

Not only were Draco and Jace a LOT alike.., they both shared that same story about taming the bird, where then the father strangled it.

I made a comment on her journal about that, and strangely never got a response back.

I'm not sure what your layout is about but I like it!

And it pains me to say it but I agree with you about James Potter.
