Today my dog got hit by a car. It was incredibly horrific. We were at the park, which is a dog park and all fenced in with a creek and lots of space to run around, when she suddenly vanished. I was looking around everywhere for her and this man put his head over the bridge and said "are you looking for a dog, because I just ran over one". She had squeezed through a gap in the fence and onto a really busy road. There was lots of blood and it was horrible and I was a little bit hysterical. The man kept saying she was dead and I said she wasn't because she was moving and he said it was just her nerves, but she was breathing, so she totally wasn't dead.

Anyway, so I wrapped her up in my hoodie and the man drove us to the emergency vet clinic. He had like a refrigerator truck, so it was very hard to get into it while carrying the dog. She seemed okay in the car, just a bit stunned but she was looking around and stuff, it's just that there was so much blood. The man was a very nice man, he kept apologising. So, I waited at the vet and this nice lady told me stories about her cat to distract me and then the vet came out and said that she (my dog, not the cat lady) had head trauma and was hemorrhaging from the tongue but she would probably be okay.

Then the man who had hit her came back to the vet to see if she was okay and he'd bought me a can of lemonade! What a nice man! I think I should send him a card or something. My sister left work to come to the vet but then the vet said I could go home, so my sister met me anyway because I had no money to get home, on account of I'd been walking the dog. While I was going to meet her, the vet called to say that my dog was responding really well and there shouldn't be any problem with her.

So, it all turned out mostly okay (except for the vet bills), but I feel very traumatised and like I don't deserve to be a dog owner. There was really a lot of blood. But luckily she will be fine, and I met some really nice people. I was going to update with the 30 day Arashi meme thing, but instead I think I will sleep until my dog comes home. It's very lonesome without her.

Oh my gosh that sounds traumatic and horrific and terrifying and nerve-wracking but I am glad everything is okay now! ♥ Have a virtual cup of tea and biscuits from me and have a good lie down :)

It sounds to me like you totally deserve to be a dog owner. You made sure she was still alive even though there was all that blood, and got her to a vet and she's going to be okay. The blood wasn't your fault after all! You did really well and your dog is lucky to have you, because some other owner might have gone 'OMG BLOOD HOW FREAKY' and chosen to believe the guy who said she was dead.

So there.

Aww honey, I am so sorry that happened to you and your dog. It's always horrible when a pet gets hurt, but I am glad that it's all going to be ok. Take care of yourself and try to relax and then give your dog gentle hugs when she comes home.

Thank God your dog's alright!

I'm so sorry that this happened to you! This really is the one thing that I'm most afraid of for my dog, because it's just something that you can't really stop from happening - yes, there are leashes, but even so, they can slip from the leash, or get out of a fenced-in location like your dog, or suddenly take off at high speed because they were scared or saw something and run over the only road in a 5-kilometer radius (like my dog once did) and there's nothing you can do about it. It's like with children: You can take the best precautions there are, but short of keeping them locked up all the time for their whole lives, you can't do much to prevent accidents. :(

I'm glad that she turned out to be alright and that there were so many nice people to support you when you needded it.

Oh no! I'm glad your dog is going to be all right. They really are like children, you know. You do your best to keep an eye on them, and you take your eye off them for a moment and they're gone, headed straight for danger.

You're a good pet mum, really! *hugs*

I kind of panicked though and wasn't much use at all! I don't know what I would've done if the man hadn't driven me to the vet hospital! There should be some sort of ambulance service for pets, I think.

But thank you! <3333333

Oh my goodness, sweetie, I am so glad to hear that your dog is going to be ok. We lost our favorite family dog to a hit and run and it was really awful.

If you were in a dog park you really shouldn't feel awful for the dog having gotten out... they are supposed to be designed for them to run around.

::hugs:: again, I am glad things are going to be ok.

Thank you <3

I called the vet tonight to check up on her and they said she was doing really well, they'd decreased her drugs and were about to try to give her solid food, so it's all fairly good, she might even be able to come home tomorrow!

It's really scary, isn't it! I'm always so careful with her because she can be a bit stupid when it comes to other dogs and things, so if I think there's the slightest risk of her running off, I'll put her on the lead, but I never thought she'd get out onto the road like that. She's normally really scared of loud noises and things too, so it must've just been one of those freak occurances.

I was really lucky, wasn't I, with her being okay and with the people I met today. I can't believe the man bought me a can of lemonade!!

It really was, I was a blubbering mess! I think I need crisis situation training or something because I had no idea what to do!

I spoke to the vet about an hour ago and they said that she's doing really well, I might be able to bring her home as soon as tomorrow!

I imagine that was awful, I can't believe the people didn't even stop for your dog, that's so horrible. I don't know what I would've done if the man who hit her hadn't been so kind and helpful.

That's true, I shouldn't feel guilty I guess, I just felt so helpless and awful seeing her lying there like that! I can't believe she found the one tiny place to get out.

Thank you! <3333333

Pets are genius escape artists, honestly. I am so glad there were decent and nice people around to help you. It makes a terrible situation possible to deal with. ^_^

OMG that really sounds so horrible!! (;___;)
I was in the car when my mom ran a dog over once years ago. That was traumatic already even though it wasn't even my dog. I hope you'll feel better soon!
And I'm glad your dog's alright! <3

OMG ANT! Thank goodness Gemma is okay. How terrifying! I would have been blubbering, too. It was good of the man to drive you to the vet. It shows he had the right sort of response to things, you know? Whomever is responsible for the dog park probably ought to know that there is a gap in the fence large enough for a dog to get out. They'll probably want to fix that or at least put up some sort of warning sign. After all, it's supposed to be a safe place to allow your dog off its lead but it isn't really, so much, if the dog can get through the fence, right?

*hugs you* I'm so sorry it happened but thank goodness she'll be okay.

It really is scary! And really, it was precisely the sort of thing that you just can't prepare for, or take precaution for, because it just isn't something you'd expect.

It was really nice of him - though I'm sure you being a total mess helped as well. ^-^ I remember the time I had a car accident and my car ended up lying on its roof and I just couldn't stop crying hysterically (I was mostly fine physically, but I had a shock) and everyone was incredibly nice to me, even the guy I'd collided with, despite the fact that I'd been at fault as much as he had and he didn't really have any reason to like me or be nice to me.

It would be good if you could take some sort of precaution though! Like maybe I should build her a full body protection suit out of foam or something!! That bounces!

Yeah, maybe it's something our body naturally does to protect us from nasty people!

Yeah, I'm going to write a letter to the council about it. In the meantime, Gemma isn't going anywhere off her lead! She has to have bedrest for the next week anyway.

It's been a really horrible few days though, I haven't really slept from worrying about her. The vet won't know she likes it when you make up songs about her and things like that. I wanted to go visit her today and maybe take her emu over but the vet said it would be better if I didn't because they want to keep her quiet and settled. She should be home tomorrow though.
