antpowerOkay, so right off the bat, I love this episode. It has everything I look for in Supernatural, Dean bringing the chuckles and Sam a little bit too, the pouty angst, brother touching and the Impala pwning the whole planet. (Of course they're not going to dump the Impala! That car is above the law!!!) There's unicorns and Spongebob and a dead-yet-kinda-hot priest, who will henceforth be known as Father McSexypants. I don't have much else to add on any of this that hasn't already been said, except LOLZ and I love you boys.
I just love season 2 so much. I mean, I loved season 1, but I love season 2. This could so easily have been a simple standalone episode like 'Faith', which as far as standalone eps go, I quite liked, but there's just so many layers going on here and they're constantly doing that this season in a way they weren't last season. Nothing is clear-cut anymore and everything that happens is just one more thing that not only adds to Sam and Dean's character arcs but to the mytharc overall. It's not just about vengeance and the YED anymore, it's about the nature of evil and the existance of good and what people are capable of. It's about right and wrong and fate and Dean's woobie face breaking our hearts and Sam's puppyeyes breaking Dean's and all those other Big Questions that great minds have pondered forever. I freaking love it, man.
The thing I love the most about the episode (besides the magic fingers, and we all know Sam was only pissy about that because why would you need magic fingers when Sam has the GIANT PORN HANDS), is the whole Sam and Dean/Archangel Michael parallels. Sam and Dean are fierce, vigilant (loving and wrathful), they're God's warriors, whether Dean believes or not. Then at the end with the evil rapist guy getting impaled by the
These boys just keep on breaking my heart. I kind of really wanted Dean to see the angel, because I just want him to have something, you know? Something other than Sam and his own moral compass. But then, it wasn't an angel at all but Father McSexypants, so I guess it worked out better the way it did. It made Dean doubt what he thought to be true and by doing that it kind of gave Sam's faith back to him in a way. The whole thing makes me wonder about what sort of role Pastor Jim played in their childhood.
Dean's speech about chaos and violence and being ripped to shreds, it kind of ripped my soul to shreds more than a little. Dean is just spread so thin and I can understand why. I mean, the only thing he has really ever had faith in is John and Sam, and John's gone and Dean's spending everything he's got trying to protect Sam. It's just so bleak, the world according to Dean Winchester. I guess that's what makes the final scene so powerful.
I also find it interesting that Dean seems to take Sam's faith as a personal affront. He actually seems to be kind of pissed off at God in general, and maybe he is. Maybe it's not that he doesn't believe, maybe it's that he does but God has never had his back, and he's out there doing God's work and whatnot and what's God ever done for him? Dude, I was totally not going to get into all this, but I guess it's hard not to with this episode.
And as for Sam? I don't know if I even have the words. His face when Father McSexypants showed up? Oh Sam. I can't even meta you because... your face! And in that final scene, he just sounds so young and lost, that I really can't be blamed for my excessive use of italics. But dude? There is no higher power than Dean Winchester. Seriously.
Yeah, that's all I've got. Sam's 'I-need-salvation-but-all-I-have-is-my-brother' face has killed me dead.
And I'm not even going to mention next week's promo.
