2x12 - night shifter
Jan. 27th, 2007 12:52 amSo, I've finally watched it...
So, I know everyone is all like ZOMG BEST EPISODE EVER, but I feel a little dissatisfied and... I dunno. Maybe a little bit empty inside. Maybe I need another three or seventeen watches. But I'll post my initial reactions anyway. And my sister's because she is sitting here saying stupid shit.
I mean, it was funny. I like the 'okey-dokey' and I can't stop looking over at my sister and saying 'mandroid'. Mandroid? I liked Ronald.
Sam in the long coat pwns me. But not my sister. We are both amused at his Scully-ness though.
I think there is more to this FBI guy. I think maybe when he said 'there's a monster in there' or whatever that line was, he wasn't necessarily talking about Dean. I think he knows about the demon and his plans for Sam and all the big foreheaded children like him. He did say something about knowing more about JW than Dean thought.
Mandroid?
Dean in the scene on the phone was such a sad woobie I wanted to hug him. And have sex with him.*
My sister thinks if the show is going all Prison Break, they could at least make funny references to it and call each other Michael and Lincoln. And Dean should wear an open shirt like Lincoln. And do crazy rhino eyes when he's trying to figure stuff out. And shaveMichael's Sam's head.
Mandroid?
My sister thinks Dean will go into 'serious meltdown' in the next episode, and it kind of looks that way from the preview thinger. Poor Dean.
I liked that the whole MotW thing was kind of secondary to other stuff, but I think they could've done more with it. I was fully expecting shapeshifter!Sam to angst out and make Dean cry and I think that's part of my disappointment. I mean, I know it was a standalone episode but they could've done some nifty character thinger with it and... I don't know. Kripke, I trust you, I do.
My sister says there should be an episode where Dean dresses up as a pirate.
Okay, I'm having a thought about the shapeshifter thing and how it could be more about Dean and Sam shifting shapes themselves and their roles as hunters and between each other. It's not coherent a thought though. I mean, I guess Sam can never go back now. And he definitely took a more assertive role in this episode, with his beating up the SWAT guys (Sam, I love you and your pretty kicking of the arse!), and I kind of liked how he wanted to protect Ronald from the shapeshifter. By being Scully.
I don't know, I will have to think about this more.
My sister just wrote 'MANDROID?' on a sticky note and stuck it to my cupboard.
Dean's 'we're screwed' at the end killed a little bit of my soul. I mean, every other time there's been a run-in with the fuzz, he's been joking about it and it hasn't bothered him terribly. In The Usual Suspects he was all 'whatevs, we need to find the bad guy and that's what's important' and later on he was joking about being like Dillinger and being on the Most Wanted List when Sam wasn't. [My sister says: his chicken's have come home to roost, haven't they. The Roosting Chickens of Dean Winchester! And then she stuck up another 'MANDROID!' post-it, this time with fancy swirly letters.] Anyway, I think Dean's change in attitude toward being hunted by the police is important, but I don't know why.
My sister thinks it ties back into how he's getting disillusioned about hunting. She is saying about how this season has been about Dean questioning the hunt and Sam is a bit more gung-ho about it, so there's a real role reversal going on there. She thinks it's going to get more like it was in Season 1, when Dean had to coerce Sam into hunting, but with a switcheroo. She says soon Sam will be the one saying 'saving things, hunting people, the family business' and listening to Metallica, while Dean listens to Radiohead. Because the shape is shifting in the relationship between the brothers.
But then she thinks that maybe Dean's changing feelings toward the hunt mirror his changing feelings toward his brother. In a gay way. Which would explain the sad look-away from the camera in Playthings when Sam said he was butch and overcompensating, because really, Dean wanted Sam to say 'it's because we love each other, let's go have hot sex in the shower'.
She just stuck up another sticky note. With pretty colours. And daisies.
I think that's all I have to say.

Date: 2007-01-26 03:28 pm (UTC)ME. TOO. I loved this episode, but shapeshifter!Sam would definitely have made it better. Especially because the shapeshifter was killing the people it turned into. As soon as Dean realized Sam was really shapeshifter!Sam, he would have FLIPPED. OUT. And as a bonus, we would have gotten another nice "you're alive!" reunion scene.

Date: 2007-01-26 07:09 pm (UTC)And I have to agree with you...I was actually a bit surprised that everyone really, really enjoyed this episode. I mean I did...there were some funny parts. But after it was over, I did feel like something was a bit..well off. I thought something more would have happened, at least like in "Skin", just like the whole mood was different. I know that we already what a shapeshifter is and all, but I was expecting more changes, more trails of globs (since it can morph into anyone really). It would have been harder to track it down and yeah. Meh.
But on the otherhand...I still love Dean in this. Sam was just not a happy puppy. But Dean...okie dokie! Love that. And I did like Ronald in this. I liked his enthusiasm and all to try to get the shape shifter out of the bank and it was kind of sad when he got shot. But Hendrickson is soo onto something. That's what I thought when he said there was a monster in the bank...not Dean...but that he might know something...but not enough yet. He makes me wonder about a lot of things. Like just the FBI vs the Winchesters now.
As for switch-a-roo, it's possible. I mean I think Sam's all into the hunting now than he was before. But I think for Dean, the only reason he would be more skeptical about it now is that he has a lot to worry about. Not only about Sammy, but the FBI, any other evil things out there, the bloody demon, and everything regarding to John. I mean, John trusted Dean and he knows what kind of guy he is. He always hunted with him and just knowing that John is letting him live...this kiddo's got a bit much on his plate. Okay no more rambling now. I just wanna give Dean a hug.

Date: 2007-01-27 08:06 am (UTC)I have to admit, I liked the episode better after a second viewing. I think there were a lot of subtleties that I missed the first time around. I still feel a bit weird about it, but I'm putting that down to the almost bleakness of the ending and Sam and Dean's realisation that yeah, they really are screwed.
Dean was just beautiful in this episode. He was funny and heartbreaking and very, very pretty. I really liked his interaction with Ronald as well. Ronald was so awesome.
I think Hendrickson might have meant Sam when he said about the monster in the building. They could easily have had him saying something about Dean being a monster, but they left it open to interpretation, and then cut straight to Sam after he said it. I really want to know how he knows so much about them, I think it probably has something to do with Gordon or whoever told Gordon about Sam from the roadhouse.
Dean definitely has too much on his plate. It's getting more and more like everyone is against the brothers and they really only have each other. Which I like in a way, but it's also sad. I just want to protect them and make everything okay!!

Date: 2007-01-27 08:20 am (UTC)They are way too sad. I don't think I've ever felt this protective of fictional characters. Sometimes I find myself yelling at the screen 'OMG KRIPKE, STOP HURTING MY BOYS!'

Date: 2007-01-30 07:48 am (UTC)Your sister is awesome. Even if she doesn't appreciate Sam's trenchcoat manly goodness.
Dean in the scene on the phone was such a sad woobie I wanted to hug him. And have sex with him.*
And where is the footnote, hm? You can't just give me dangling asterisk that leads nowhere. It makes my academic OCD all nervous.
I mean, I know it was a standalone episode but they could've done some nifty character thinger with it and...
I think they were doing nifty character things, just in a subtle way. They've already used the "shape-shifter tells us what one of the boys really thinks" device once, and OK, SPN isn't unknown to use the same device two (or three, or four) times, but I liked the way they told us a lot about how the characters are doing this ep without actually saying any of it. I think it's a sign that the show's maturing in its approach to characterisation (not that it wasn't always awesome, but it's a bit less anivlicious now).
My sister says there should be an episode where Dean dresses up as a pirate.
...
If this does not happen, it will be a crime. A crime, I tell you. Sam could be the cabin boy! Oooh, Sam in knee-length britches... *dead*
I guess Sam can never go back now.
*flails* Sam! Oh no, Sam! *weeps*
I love the fact that your serious thinky-thoughts about the boys and their relationship with each other and hunting always leads to Wincest. *pets you*

Date: 2007-01-30 08:14 am (UTC)* Addition by my sister, which does not necessarily reflect the views of Ant, but probably does anyway.
You're right about the characterisation in this ep, I guess I just expected to be more clubbed over the head with it. I did like how the MotW was a complete side to what was going on with the boys and the FBI and all, and all the emotional stuff was subtexty. (Can it be subtexty if it's TV? Is subtexty even a word?) The writing on this show is just going forward in leaps and bounds and I'm still getting used to it, I guess.
This episode, seriously, each time I watch it I pick up something new. And more worrisome. I just want to gather the boys up and hide them in my back room and protect them from the big scary world!
My sister is now wandering around singing the Sex Pistols 'Frigging in the Rigging' and making up verses about cabin boy!Sam.
Your annoyed!Sam icon rules me.
