I'm surprised there aren't any HP cons in like, Japan.

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2006-07-25 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW, right? *sulks with* We should totally make a Lumos, Asia-Pacific region thing. Or something. :\

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
We should! It will be soooo much better and everyone will be terribly sad that they live too far away to make it. Yays!

*mind boggles at the massiveness the organisation such an event would take*

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
*giggles* It could SO be the Asia-Australia Pacific area or something. We could call it, um, Accio! Because we're bringing the convention to US. That would be so so cool. :|

*also* I don't even KNOW what goes on in those conventions. :| But it would be totally awesome and doable, I think, if people in our area are willing to fly out somewhere closer for a few days and if we'll be doing drabbles and what-not. I think we just need to be able to find a hotel to rent? Maybe get a sponsor. Hmm. Actually, yeah, we can tie up with some sponsor or something--maybe we could do it with the release of the seventh book, you know?

!!! I'm getting way ahead of myself, aren't I. :|

Accio!!!

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Let's have it in Bali and then we can drink cocktails in the pool bar, and that will rock.

If we contacted organisers of Lumos and asked what the main things we need to think about are and that kind of thing, they would prolly be most helpful. My sister is Events Manager for a really big company and puts on things like that all the time, so I could ask her about stuff too.

We can think of nifty things to have like panels and readings and other things that are cool. Like a Harry and Draco kissing booth!!!

whispers: we could totally do this. We are smart like that!

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
*giggles* Totally!

I know, it could work, actually. I was thinking that if we held it here, I'd know of one company who might be willing to put it up, and I have a couple of hotels in mind that could work, maybe. Or somewhere else, pretty much the same things would work. Our foremost concern would be money, I think, but with your sister and the original Lumos organizers, I don't think it would be very hard to actually put it together. We just need to know, for instance, how many people are willing to go, or might be interested to go, what their budgets would be, when they'd like to go, and so on and so on.

Ohhh, I'm excited! :D

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we'd totally have to work out the money thing. We'd need projected figures and that kind of thing when doing our sponsorship proposal. Maybe we need to put a thing up on the Daily Snitch or something to see how many people would be interested? We'd need to figure out how many people we need to make it worth it, and how much to charge.

Also, would it be better to organise it ourselves or to hire an events company to do it all.

Do we know when book 7 is going to come out? Just approximately?

Yays for us!!

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Daily Snitch and that other newsletter and maybe we can ask The Leaky Cauldron and Fiction Alley to run announcements also?

So, hmm. First we ask the Lumos and Witching Hour and whatever else organizers how much they had to use for which activities. Then we estimate how much we need to get from sponsors and how much people are essentially going to have to pay for the places we have in mind.

Did the other cons get events companies? It'd be more expensive, but I guess we could see first what kind of workload we're going to get, and then also how much help we could get from other people.

It'll be on 2007, I think around July?

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee.

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if they got events companies, but it would surely be easier. If we are asking around to get a feel about numbers, we should probably also ask about people being willing to volunteer also.

Do you think it will be that soon? I suppose we will have to wait until a release date is announced before we make any definite plans.

This is going to be awesome!!

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2006-07-31 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, yeah, we need to just pretty much canvass and estimate everything.

Actually, I'm not sure. It COULD just be the release of the fifth movie which, compared to the last and final book of the series, not nearly as worthy of organizing a whole Asia-Pacific convention over. :P Hmm, yeah, we'd have to wait for announcements, so everything we do right now would be tentative first, but oh my god, can you imagine just how awesome it's going to be? *bounces* Cannot wait! :D:D:D

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know! It is going to be the most awesome thing in awesomeville!!!

I definitely think that book 7 is a much worthier event than the 5th movie. Or perhaps just a bit before book 7 is released, because I guess fandom buzz will be at its height about then.

Go us!!!

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm seriously so excited about this already! :D

Okay, so the con shall be set near the release of the seventh book, and riiiiiiiiiiight now we should likely ask the Lumos/Witching Hour/etc organizers how they did the whole thing, and then after that, we can ask around through FA.org and The Leaky Cauldron and HPANA if there's anyone interested in going.

Whee!!

Re: Accio!!!

[identity profile] maegunnbatt.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
*squishes* I think it's a faboo idea! And HPEF is the organization that did Nimbus, The Witching Hour, Lumos, and they are doing Prophecy in 2007. I think they do all of the organizing through volunteers, and a lot of the money they use to put on these cons comes from HPEF, and then some more money comes from sponsors, and, of course, the registration fees. It might be a good idea to email HPEF (you can do it through FA, I think) and let them know that you are interested in doing an Asia-Australia con, and see what they think, if they have any suggestions, or even if they'd be interested in doing one in that corner of the world. It's my understanding that they are looking at doing one in England sometime within the next three years, and it usually takes them about a year and a half to plan everything. There were 1200+ people at Lumos, and the food alone cost upwards of $50,000, if that gives you a frame of reference.

The other thing you could do is an informal con, where you reserve a block of rooms at a hotel, throw together some events, but basically spend a weekend geeking out, like an extensive meet-up. I think there are enough fans who would go if you gave them enough time to plan (and save $$) for it.

Besides, everyone needs an excuse to go to Australia.

*notes stuff down*

You are very clever, aren't you. Also, 1200+ people sure is a lot of people.

I think YOU need to come to Australia. And you know it!!!!

*loves you*

Stupid Lumos in stupid other countries. What happened to the rest of the world hmm? We have feelings too you know!

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I know! Everyone just forgets about us because we're all the way over here. It's because they're jealous of our extreme coolness, you know.

There will be a big hole there, you know. It will be the Negative Ant Space and it will be depressing.

I'm not. :) Actually, I will be in Las Vegas at the end of Lumos, but will not be able to see anyone from the fandom. I'm sending fandom-ish vibes to everyone to make myself feel better. Hehe.

[identity profile] ant-power.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
But at least you get to be in Las Vegas, which is pretty nifty in itself!
